9-run 4th inning equals big win for Wolves / Softball

The Coupeville High softball team erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning to race past rival South Whidbey 10-0 in six innings in a non-league game Friday, April 27, on the Wolves’ diamond.

The Falcons feature pitcher Mackenzee Collins, who will play for D1 Colorado State University next year.

Collins blanked the Wolves behind four strikeouts over the first three innings.

Coupeville solved the Collins’ puzzle in the fourth when it stroked eight hits, including a triple by Sarah Wright, to bury the Falcons.

The win helped Coupeville complete a series sweep of South Whidbey; the Wolves won the season opener 12-0.

Wright slashed two singles to go along with her triple, and Katrina McGranahan added three hits.

Lauren Rose, Scout Smith, Chelsea Prescott, Mollie Bailey, MacKenzie Davis and Coral Caveness all singled.

McGranahan was the winning pitcher with a four-hit shutout and four strikeouts.

“She (Collins) is a good pitcher; she throws hard,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We started to get dialed in.

“That gets us to 10 wins, which is nice, and sweeping South Whidbey is even better.”

Coupeville (2-0, 10-4), which has already wrapped up the Olympic League title, completes league play at Klahowya (0-2, 8-3) at 4:15 p.m. Monday, April 30.

The Wolves will finish the regular season with four non-league games; the first is 3:45 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Sequim.
