The Coupeville girls tennis team started the new season on a winning note by dispatching visiting Cavelaro of Lake Stevens 4-1 Wednesday, March 17.
In No. 1 singles, Julia Sierra Castano used dominate ground strokes and net play to win 6-1, 6-0.
In first doubles, Jessica Blanchette and Jordan Akins overcame first-set jitters to win 1-6, 7-6, 11-9. Coach Ken Stange said, “I was very proud of the way they persevered after dropping the first set.”
The second doubles duo of Lily Doyle and Lexi Blanchette won 7-5, 6-3.
Freshman Jessica Riddle was joined by last-minute replacement Jamie Price and the pair won in their first varsity action 8-6. Stange said, “Their win secured the third point of the match and sealed the deal for CHS.”
Marie Hesselgrave was edged in second singles 7-6, 5-7, 7-10.
