North Whidbey Aquatic Club members take part in Kamiak Mile
Twelve North Whidbey Aquatic Club (NWAC) swimmers completed the Kamiak Mile Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Kamiak High School Pool in Mukilteo.
NWAC was led by Jacob Jepsen, 15, who dropped 10 seconds to 17:31.89 to finish second in the 13-and-over mixed event that included 54 competitors.
Josh Jepsen, 14, also finished in the top six, swimming to a fifth-place with an 18:07.74.
Setting a team record with her split at the 1,000-yard mark of the mile was Laura Rosen, 14, who beat her own team record by three seconds with an 11:08.38 for the shorter distance.
Meeting Pacific Northwest Swimming (PNS) Championships qualifying times were Emily Huffer, Marissa Morris and Molly Vagt. Establishing PNS Gold cuts were Hannah Schroeder, Brett Vagt, Ethan Tack, Joey Jepsen and Toren Wood.
Aquajets swimming PR’s included Joel Erickson, Jacob Jepsen, Joey Jepsen, Marissa Morris, Brett Vagt, Molly Vagt and Wood. Those completing their first mile, the longest event in competitive pool swimming, were Erickson, Huffer, Schroeder, Tack and Cullen Wood.
NWAC swimmer of the meet was Tack, who, at 9 years old and with no experience at the distance, notched a PNS 12-and-under Gold cut with a brisk opening pace that he only increased as the race progressed. He maintained a strong kick and long, efficient stroke throughout, beating his seed time by almost a minute and a half with a 24:34.96.
NWAC competes next at the Kamiak Age Group Invitational in Mukilteo, Feb. 27 and 28. It will field a team of 30 athletes.
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club (NWAC) is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college. Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.
New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.
