Coupeville High School’s girls soccer team cruised by host Mount Vernon Christian 3-0 Thursday to open the season on an easy note.

The Wolves outshot MVC 30-3 and dominated the match throughout. Coupeville coach Mike Thornton said, “We controlled the ball 85 percent of the game.”

Although the Wolves were always in control they had nothing to show for it until senior Catlin Phillips scored “off set pieces” in the 41st minute. Phillips added a second goal at the 62 mark, and junior Casey Andrews hit pay dirt 10 minutes later for the Wolves.

Senior Ashley Manker earned the shutout in goal for Coupeville.

Things should get tougher for the Wolves next week. They start Cascade Conference play Tuesday when highly regarded King's Garden comes to town for a match at 6 p.m. JV action starts at 4:00.
