Power squadron teaches boating

The Deception Pass Sail & Power Squadron presents the Squadron Boating Course on Monday and Wednesday evenings, beginning Oct. 5 and continuing through Oct. 26.

The course is presented twice a week for three weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Whidbey Island campus of Skagit Valley College, Hayes Hall Room 112, 1900 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.

This six-session course covers boating basics including rules of the road, boating safety, required equipment, navigational aids and “rules-of-the road,” light and sound signals, knot tying, radio operations and an introduction to piloting and chart reading.

This course qualify boaters for the new Washington State Safe Boating cards, now required for some boaters, and will give boaters a deeper understanding of seamanship.

Registration and payment may be remitted at the first class session Monday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.

The cost is $25 per student and includes books.Spouses or family members who share a set of books are charged $13.
