Junior sprint triathlon Aug. 16

The North Whidbey Park and Recreation Department presents its annual Junior Sprint Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 16, at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool, beginning at 4 p.m.

The event is open to boys and girls ages 6 through 14 at a cost of $10 per individual.

The entry fee includes a T-shirt and dessert at the conclusion of the race.

Relay teams in the event can be of any age.

Competitors will swim 10 widths of the pool, a total of 147 yards, and then bike 10 laps on a closed grass course behind the pool covering 2,000 yards.

A bicycle helmet is required for everyone in the bike race.

The final phase of the event involves a 600-yard run.

Special awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group.

Pre-registration is required by Friday, Aug. 7.

Contestants should check in at the pool no later than 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
