Fifteen compete at Striders Invitational

The Whidbey Island Running Club was represented by 15 athletes May 30 at the Cascade Striders Invitational, held at Sammamish High School.

There were 14 teams represented at the meet coming from as far as Oregon, with teams from the Tigard Youth Track Club and the Portland Athletic Club among the competitors. Coach Catie Rodeheffer said most of the teams were from the Greater Seattle area.

There was high level competition represented as some athletes competing were National level qualifiers from last year’s Junior Olympic USAT Track and Field competition.

The local kids did a good job against some top-notch competition, with John Rodeheffer winning the 13 and 14-year-old boys 3,000 meters in a time of 10:12.60, and Christina Wicker capturing the 13 and 14-yearold girls high jump, sailing over the bar at 1.25 meters.

Wicker also finished second in the long jump and Rodeheffer was second in the 1,500.

Laura Rodeheffer took second in the 9 and 10-year-old girls 800, and the 9 and 10-year-old 4x100 relay team composed of Carolyn Wicker, Megan Keating, Kaitlyn Chelberg and Katie Rodeheffer who finished second in a time of 1:05.12.

Wicker also placed second in the turbo javelin event.

WIRC is now accepting try-outs Mondays and Fridays from 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. at the NWMS track until school gets out for the summer season and Junior Olympics. Our Association meet for Junior Olympics is June 27 and 28, and the team has two more developmental meets to prepare with. Following the Junior Olympic Association Meet there are meets through July and August.
