Bearcats too much for Oak Harbor
WesCo North volleyball champion Monroe displayed why it finished the regular season with an 8-0 record, defeating the Wildcats in three straight games on Senior Night at Oak Harbor High School Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Bearcats, currently the eighth-ranked class 4A team in the most recent Washingtion state coaches poll, were led by outside hitter Kylin Munoz who had 29 kills and served five aces in the match.
Munoz, the 6-foot, 1-inch senior, will attend Brigham Young University in the fall where she said she received a full-ride scholarship to play volleyball for the Cougars.
Monroe opened an 11-7 lead in the first game of the match and stretched the margin to 17-9 before Munoz served an ace to give the Bearcats a 25-13 victory.
In the second game the Wildcats again fell behind early but didn’t quit, rallying to tie the score at one point, 11-11.
However, the Bearcats got their offense in gear once again and captured the second game 25-14.
The third game of the match was an entirely different story.
Oak Harbor senior Kim Mowbray, playing in the final match of her high school career, took things over at the serving line and at the net and kept the Wildcats in the game.
With help from fellow seniors Jessica Muzzall and Jennifer Jansen, Oak Harbor played right with the Bearcats.
After falling behind 6-3, the Wildcats got a side out and Jansen knocked down a kill to cut the lead to a single point.
Muzzall followed with an ace on serve and just like that, the score was tied 6-6.
Later in the game, Mowbray recorded a kill and then tipped down another point to give the Wildcats to a 22-18 lead.
With Melany Cone on the serving line, Mowbray made a big block at the net to put Oak Harbor up 23-19 and Monroe coach April Munoz called a time out.
After that, the Bearcats came roaring back on three kills and a tip by Kylin Munoz to reclaim the lead, 24-23.
Monroe junior Emily Bourg then served a game-winning ace for a 25-23 Bearcat victory.
Cone had 20 assists for Oak Harbor.
Jansen led the Wildcats in kills
with nine and served three aces. Mowbray had seven kills and Muzzall had six.
Oak Harbor ends the season 1-7 in WesCo North matches and 3-11 overall.
