HOMECOMING SLIDESHOW: Big plays break down Wolves
Homecoming 2008 was not a happy time for fans of Coupeville High School football.
This season has been a long one for the winless Wolves and Friday’s game was not much different than the previous seven contests have been.
The hard-charging Cedarcrest Red Wolves built a 49-0 lead before Coupeville scored its first touchdown, and defeated the Wolf Pack 49-20 in a Cascade Conference matchup.
One of the positive aspects of the game was the Wolves had their highest point total since the 37-14 loss to Port Townsend in the opening game of the season.
“That’s kind of how it’s been for us all season long,” coach Ron Bagby said. “We play pretty good for awhile and then give up one big play. One big play leads to another and it’s kind of frustrating for us.”
On Cedarcrest’s first series of downs, quarterback Tommy Edwards engineered a five-play, 53-yard drive, capped by a 21-yard Jackson Pelis run for a touchdown. Dusty Felts kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Red Wolf lead.
Cedarcrest held Coupeville to three plays and out forcing a punt, which Tyler Erickson returned 52 yards to pay dirt for a 14-0 lead.
“That punt return really hurt,” Bagby said.
Things got really ugly in the second quarter.
The Red Wolves put their third touchdown on the board at the 9:57 mark to push the margin to 28-0 and then added a fourth score with 2:44 left before the break on a 14-yard run by Darren Collinwood.
Coupeville fumbled the ball on its first play from scrimmage following the kickoff and the Red Wolves were right back in business at the Wolf Pack 2-yard line.
Jacob Klingenberg punched the ball in the end zone to make the score 35-0 and a 7-yard run by Collinwood with 22 seconds remaining put a cap on the first half scoring.
“Those two quick touchdowns early in the quarter just broke our backs,” Bagby said.
Cedarcrest coach Jason Frederick put his reserves in the game to start the second half and Jason Woelz scored with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter for the Red Wolves’ final touchdown.
Coupeville got it’s offense in gear in the final 12 minutes of the game when Chase Griffin scored on a 5-yard dash with 10:09 remaining.
The junior all-purpose player scored a second time at the 5:43 mark, hauling in a 75-yard scoring strike from quarterback Jason Bagby.
Justin Adams put Coupeville’s final touchdown on the board with 50 seconds remaining on a 2-yard run.
“I was glad to see them come back in the second half and score some points,” Bagby said. “We played pretty well in the second half.”
Adams carried the ball 20 times for 125 yards and Griffin had three receptions for 99 yards.
Bagby was 14-for-28 in passing for 216 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions.
“It’s just been a tough year for us so we’ll just have to weather the storm,” Bagby said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids who will be back next year.”
The Wolves end regular season play Thursday, hosting cross-island rival South Whidbey. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Mickey Clark Field.
