Whidbey wins again | 13/14 baseball
Overcoming an extra-inning loss in the first round, the Whidbey Island Junior (13/14) baseball team bounced back with a 13-0 drubbing of Anacortes Tuesday, July 1, in the District 11 tournament in Anacortes.
The Whidbey team, which includes players from the North, Central and South Whidbey leagues, faces South Skagit at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, in a loser-out game. The winner moves on to face Sedro-Woolley, the team that beat Whidbey in nine innings Monday, in the championships series.
The first Sedro-Woolley game will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Anacortes' Daniels Field. (The game was originally scheduled to be played in Oak Harbor.) The team that comes through the losers' bracket will have to defeat Sedro-Woolley twice to advance to state. The second game, if necessary, will be a 1 p.m. Friday in Anacortes.
In Whidbey's win over Anacortes, Taylor Brown (South Whidbey), Donny Kloewer (NW), Joseph Dixon (NW) and Jojo Welling (CW) combined to pitch a two-hit shutout.
Brown was 2-for-2 with a walk, two stolen bases and an RBI; Jakob Dailey (NW) recorded a single, walk and three runs; and Cody Wilkie (SW) collected a double, walk, stolen base and RBI.
