Whidbey Island Race Week ended Friday, July 25, and the 2008 event had one of the largest turnouts of boats and participants in recent years.

Ten classes of boats competed and rivalries between skippers and crews that had simmered since the 2007 race were settled — somewhat. At least until the 2009 event.

In the PO Fleet, John Hoag at the helm of Shrek was the winner with a low score of 19 points, while the P1 Fleet winner was Tiger/Dangerous when Striped, captained by Chris Winnard. The FT10 Tiger boat had a score of 14.

In P2 Fleet competition, Brian Watkins’ Declaration of Independence was the winner with 19 points and Kevin Swackenhamer/Freund steered Veloce to victory in P4 Fleet with 10 points.

P5 Fleet competition was won by Dan Kaseler at the helm of Pteron with a low-point total of 28, while Pat Denney’s Here & Now was the P6 Fleet winner with 14 points.

In P7’s Fleet Bodacious, skippered by J. Rosenback was the victor scoring 23 points, and Ben Braden’s boat More Uff Da was the champion in P8 Fleet competition.

Dragonfly, skippered by Karen Anderson rounded out the competition winning the P9 Fleet recording the low score of just 9 points.
