Wolves with 3rd straight | Tennis

The Coupeville High School tennis team took the sting out of a recent losing streak by winning its final three matches, including upsetting Archbishop Murphy 4-3 in Everett Thursday, May 1.

Coupeville (4-4, 6-7) lost 3-2 to the Wildcats (5-3, 5-3) April 21.

Winners for the Wolves were Allie Hanigan (6-0, 6-4), Jacki Ginnings (6-1, 7-5), Winter Thorne/Ivy Luvera (6-1, 6-2) and Micky LeVine/Valen Trujillo (6-3, 6-3).

Hanigan, after an easy first set, pulled away from a 4-4 tie in the second set for the win.

Ginnings avenged an earlier loss to her Murphy opponent, using "long, drawn out rallies," according to coach Ken Stange.

With the team score tied at 3, LeVine and Trujillo played the day's final match and wrapped up the win for the Wolves.

In the other matches, Sydney Autio lost 6-1, 6-0; Sydney Aparicio lost 6-4, 7-6(8-6); and Samantha Martin/McKenzie Bailey lost 6-7(6-8), 6-4, 10-4.

"The girls and I were all pretty excited by the result," Stange said. "The win gave us a 6-7 final record for the year. I'll admit that I'd hoped we would end up with a winning record, but after losing five straight, winning the final three matches eased much of the pain."

Next up is the district tournament at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at South Whidbey.
