Wolves' offense picks up at Sultan | Baseball

With its offense getting on a roll in the second half of the game, the Coupeville High School baseball team won 9-0 at Sultan Monday, April 28.

The offensive outburst backed a two-hit, 12-strikeout performance by Wolves' starter Ben Etzell.

After leaving runners on in every inning, Coupeville finally broke through in the fifth for two runs.

Wade Schaef walked and Jake Tumblin singled him to third. Tumblin then stole second. Etzell was intentionally walked, setting Josh Bayne's a two-out, two-run single.

After finally scoring, the Wolves "seemed to relax and continued to pour it on offensively," said coach Willie Smith.

Coupeville tacked on three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh with the help of key hits from Aaron Trumbull, Aaron Curtin and Kurtis Smith.

Tumblin finished 2-for-3 with a double, Curtin also went 2-for-3 and Korbin Korzan singled and stole three bases.

"We are hoping that with four more games this week and playoffs looming next week, that we can use this game to help get us in a groove offensively and we can hit the playoffs running and in good shape," coach Smith said.

Coupeville (5-8, 6-8) plays Sultan (0-14, 0-15) twice more this week at 4 p.m., first in Coupeville Wednesday, April 30, and then back in Sultan Friday, May 2.

The Wolves also have two makeup games. Granite Falls (10-4, 11-5) visits at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, and Coupeville goes to Lakewood (6-10, 6-11) at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3.
