Aquajets tune up for PNS Championships | NWAC
North Whidbey Aquatic Club members performed well in recent meets as they prepare for the Pacific Northwest Swim Championships.
Nov. 23 and 24, 12 Aquajets competed in the 2013 Pacific Northwest Swimming Age Group Invitational at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo.
Led by Patrick Caldwell (new PNS qualifier in the 50 and 100 free), Joe Gorman and Ashleigh Merrill, who all achieved 100 percent success, NWAC swimmers got a final tune up before the PNS 14&U Championships and the PNS Senior Championships. The finals will be held in Federal Way Dec. 13-15 and Dec. 19-22 respectively.
In Marysville Dec. 7 and 8, 14 NWAC swimmers attended the PNS Fall Divisionals, the first of three championship meets this month.
NWAC was led by Mollie Briddell, OHHS junior and gold medalist in the 100 back, silver medalist in the 200 free and bronze medalist in the 50 free; Joe Gorman, OHHS sophomore and gold medalist in the 200 back and silver medalist in the 100 back; Lawrence Zapata, gold medalist in the 50 breast and silver medalist in the 50 back; and Kelsey Vogt, OHHS sophomore, silver medalist in the 200 fly.
Another “tune-up meet” before the PNS Championships was the 65th annual Husky Invitational, one of the largest invitational meets in the U.S., Dec. 6-8 in Federal Way.
Represented by Taliah Black and Olivia Tungate, the NWAC girls achieved 100 percent success, with Tungate qualifying for the "C" final in the 200 fly.
Each got some good experience racing against many college athletes in preparation for PNS Championships.
Eight Aquajets have qualified for the 14-and-under and Senior Championships: Black, Caldwell, Jerrin-James Concepcion, Jeron Kosbar, Merrill, Jillian Pape, Tungate and Lawrence Zapata.
NWAC is a taxpayer-supported program of North Whidbey Park and Recreation District, open to youth up to 18 years of age.
The team’s mission is to foster the development of Whidbey Island youth as competitive swimmers and well-adjusted individuals.
Tryouts are available by appointment, and the first two weeks of workouts are free.
