Winter prep preview | Oak Harbor cheer
The Oak Harbor High School competitive and sideline cheer teams are off to a fresh start.
If the Wildcats’ competitive squad hopes to match last year’s second place finish in the state tournament, it will have to accomplish it with a bevy of new parts.
Only two letter winners return and Oak Harbor is being directed by a new coach, Crista Carlson.
The veterans are juniors Juliet Aspery and Hailey Williamson.
Oak Harbor missed out on the state title last year by just two points. The runner-up finish was the fourth in six years for the Wildcats.
Aspery and Williamson will receive help from key newcomers Sydney Harrington, Jessica Aguilar, Zoe White, Candis Aborqui and Shaniya Murphy, according to Carlson.
Though inexperienced, the team is “enthusiastic” and full of “fast learners,” “great dancers” and “strong girls,” Carlson said.
Most of the sideline team is also new this season, Carlson said.
Her expectations are “to build a great new team for competition and to support teams for sideline.”
The season will be a success, Carlson said, “If we are able to help foster school spirit at Oak Harbor High School and achieve our own physical goals as well.”
The competition season begins Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Harbor Cheerfest in Gig Harbor.
