Wolves can't slow Sultan | Football

The Coupeville High School football team scored 21 points against one of the Cascade Conference's top defenses Friday, Nov. 1, unfortunately, it couldn't stop one of the league's best running backs as Sultan rolled by the Wolves 54-21 at Mickey Clark Field.

Coupeville (3-5) wraps up the season with a nonleague game at 5:30 p.m. at home Friday, Nov. 8, with Chimacum.

The Cowboys are 1-7 this fall. Two of the losses came to Bellevue Christian, a team Coupeville defeated 32-0 in the season opener.

Coupeville coach Tony Maggio said it looked like his club was going to be able to compete with Sultan in the early going. Then the Turks overcame a fourth-and-seven to score and the Wolves dropped a sure touchdown pass.

"After that, it was the Antonio Rivas show," Maggio said.

Rivas scored five touchdowns while piling up 185 yards rushing to lead the Turks to the win.

Sultan bolted to a 35-7 lead midway through the second quarter to cruise to the win.

Maggio said poor tackling was an issue: "We are usually better than that. We often hit them in the backfield but didn't wrap up."

Not all was negative for the Wolves.

"Running the ball wasn't a problem," Maggio said.

With leading rusher Jake Tumblin out with a concussion, the Wolves turned to Josh Bayne. Bayne responded with a career-best 204 yards on 24 carries and scored all three Coupeville touchdowns.

Wiley Hesselgrave chipped in with 39 yards on seven carries.

Bayne also led the team in receiving, snaring four passes for 58 yards.

Quarterback Gunnar Langvold completed eight of 20 passes for 148 yards.

Lineman Nick Streubel returned to full-time duty after injury issues and led the Wolves with 12 tackles, 10 solo.

Hesselgrave finished with nine tackles, Bayne eight and Wade Schaef seven.
