Fly fishing anglers meet

The Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club will have its June meeting on Wednesday, July 9, at the Race Road fire house south of Coupeville.

A get-together starts at 6:30 p.m. for get acquainted chit chat and the featured program begins at 7 p.m., followed by other activities and discussions.

Come early for a good seat. Members are invited to bring a friend and non-member guests are welcome.

NWTA offers soccer camps

The Northwest Training Academy is offering a series of summer soccer camps that will allow players to fine tune their soccer skills or help beginners be better prepared for the upcoming season.

When playing on a team and only practicing twice a week, coaches don’t have time to help you fine tune playing skills, and that’s where NorthWest Training Academy can help. NorthWest Training Academy is a local company on Whidbey Island.

All of the camps will be conducted at Fort Nugent Park in Oak Harbor.

The Fast Footwork camp is July 7 to 10 at a cost of $60 per player.

Footwork is all about ball skills and moves that you can make one-on-one and under pressure. There will be two separate sessions run for this camp and there are seven spots left in each session.

Session 1 — 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Session 2 — 5 to 6:15 p.m.

The soccer camp is Aug. 4 to 7 at a cost of $55 per player.

This camp is for everyone of any and all skill levels. There will be two separate sessions run for this camp and there are 10 spots left in each session.

Session 1 — 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Session 2 — 5 to 6:15 p.m.

The Goal Keeper I camp is Aug. 11 to 13 at a cost of $55.

Basic and advanced Training will be offered for all skill levels. There will be two separate sessions for this camp, with eight spots left in each session.

Get fit this summer

Justin Ronning, physical education teacher at Crescent Harbor Elementary School, is hosting a “Get Fit Summer” PE camp from 9 a.m. to noon July 21 to 25 at the school.

The cost of the camp is $75 per participant.

Soccer camp July 21 to 25

Joseph Supang, a graduate of South Whidbey High School and a former member of Seattle University’s men’s soccer team, is hosting a soccer camp July 21 to July 25 at Oak Harbor Middle School.

The camp is for all players ages 9 through 18 and will be from 2 to 5 p.m. each day.

The cost of the camp is $120 per player with a $10 discount if a player has attended one of Supang’s camps before.

Skills covered at the camp include dribbling, receiving, turning under pressure and passing. Also included will be drills on attacking and defending, including one-on-one defense, group defense and heading.

Supang has extensive playing and coaching experience and was the Overlake High School boys varsity coach in 2006. He is a member of the Seattle Wolves FC, played on the Botswana National Team in 2007, played professional soccer in Europe and was a member of the Seattle Sounders Select Team in 2002.

Tennis tourney in Langley

A singles only tennis tournament for men and women ages 14 and older in scheduled for July 11 to July 13 on the South Whidbey High School tennis courts.

The cost to enter the tournament is $15 per player.

Registration forms may be picked up at the South Whidbey Park and Recreation office, and also at the Oak Harbor, Coupeville and South Whidbey tennis courts.

VFW golf tourney July 19

The 14th annual VFW Post 7392 Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Gallery Golf Course Saturday, July 19.

The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy an 18-hole round of golf and then head off for the V-Dome at the VFW Post at 3037 N. Goldie Road for a real summertime picnic.

At the picnic, golfers eat for free and their guests can join in the for just $5.

Entry fee for the golf tournament is $50 per person and includes green fees. All proceeds benefit the VFW Post 7392 Scholarship fund.

Hobie Cat races

Hobie Class Association of North American is hosting a Hobie Catamaran area championship July 19 and 20.

This is one of only five such events that takes place in North America every year.

Racing will take place out of Penn Cove and the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The Hobie Cats will be located in the city park in Oak Harbor prior to and after the races for viewing by the public.

Youth sailing lessons at marina

Two sessions of beginning and intermediate youth sailing lessons will be offered by the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Foundation this summer at the Oak Harbor Marina.

Participants, ages 9 and older, will learn how to sail on El Toro sailboats.

They will learn the basics of rigging the boat, steering techniques, sailing rules, sail trim, racing rules, and boating safety.

The cost of each session is $75 and $12 for the sailing textbook which can be purchased at the first class session.

The next sailing camp and will be held will be held July 12, 13, 19, 20, Aug. 2 and 3.
