Wildcats 2nd in 171-team Oregon meet | Cross country

The strength of the Oak Harbor High School cross country teams is being flexed well beyond Northwest Washington. The Wildcats, in their annual trip to Seaside, Ore., for the Three-course Challenge, finished second in the top division in both the boys and girls standings of the 171-team meet.

Mountain View, Ore., finished ahead of Oak Harbor in both standings, topping the Wildcat boys 82-188 and the girls 83-213.

At the Challenge, each team is split into three groups with each covering a different course, one difficult, one medium and one easy. The courses, at Camp Rilea in Warrenton, Ore., often include water and mud hazards. Over 2,000 runners took part.

John Rodeheffer was the boys hard course champion, covering the 5,000 meters in 18:56 to defeat 449 other runners. Clayton Richardson placed fifth in the race in 19:41.

Oak Harbor also earned top 5 finishes from Alex Laiblin and Jonalynn Horn. Laiblin was third out of 261 while running the girls hard course in 23:38. Horn, in the 5,000-meter moderate race of 276, ran 22:38.

Freshman Laura Rodeheffer was ninth over the hard course in 23:38.

Oak Harbor and Cascade go to Marysville-Pilchuck for a Wesco tri-meet at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.
