A stellar performance by Oak Harbor’s number six golfer boosted the Wildcats to the Western Conference North title Monday afternoon.

Stephan Steitenroth, a senior at Coupeville High School, shot a team-best 3-over par 75 at Everett’s Walter Hall Golf Course, helping the Wildcats to a score of 390 — one stroke better than Snohomish’s 391.

“His was the last group off the course today,” OHHS head coach John Matzen said. “Our chance of winning was looking pretty bleak until word came in that Stephen had played very well. You might say that this was golf’s version of a buzzer beater.”

Steitenroth shot a 2-under par 34 on the back nine, giving him the best back nine score of the day.

Other top Oak Harbor performers Monday included senior Matt Holmly (78), sophomore Josh Whitley (78) and freshman Phil Reedy (78).

Sophomore Eric McCardle shot a 9-over par 81, giving him a two-day WesCo North tournament total of 151 and a tie for first place overall with Mount Vernon’s Brian O’Laughlin.

Oak Harbor begins the Western Conference district tournament at 1 p.m., tomorrow, May 11 at the Gallery Golf Course.
