Shockers shut down Merchants
July 3, 2008 · Updated 7:17 PM
Offensive production continued to be a problem for the Whidbey Merchants in their Sunday home doubleheader with Bellingham, as they dropped two games, 12-2 and 13-0.
Whidbey, now 0-6, battled toe-to-toe through two innings of game one, but a six-run explosion from the Shockers in the third put them in a hole they couldnt dig out of.
Trailing 12-0 in the sixth, the Merchants tacked on their only two runs of the game on a bloop RBI single from Casey Richardson followed by an RBI double from Drew Richardson.
Whidbey only got four other hits, two from Richard Cline and one each from Walt Bankowski and Mike Gouge.
Bellingham cranked out 13 hits in the game-one win.
Troubles continued for the Merchants in the second game as they were shut out for the third time this season.
Whidbey colletected two hits from Casey and Drew Richardson in the first, but managed only two more the rest of the game one from Tim Shelley and one from Keith Ross.
Bellingham scored nine runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach early.
The Merchants, who are sponsored by Alaska USA Home Mortgage, play their next doubleheader at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, June 26 at OHHS against La Conner.
