Track teams run at Westling

Before the season started Oak Harbor track and field coach Jay Turner wasn’t sure what to expect with a young group of athletes.

That’s not the case anymore.

Both the Oak Harbor girls and boys teams continue to get stronger, most recently placing high in the 14-team Westling Invitational at South Whidbey High School.

“We were pretty stoked both ways, for the boys and the girls,” Turner said.

The boys nabbed a third place finish overall, with 80 total points. Only Ballard (139) and Kennedy (99.5) finished higher.

Leading the way for Oak Harbor was senior sprinter Cameron Fuller, who grabbed a second in the 200 (23.25), third in the 400 (51.34), fourth in the 100 (11.81) and was a member of the third-place 1600 meter relay team.

The Wildcats received their only victory of the day in the high jump where freshman Roderick Rumble leaped a personal best 6-foot-2 inches.

“That’s pretty impressive for a freshman,” Turner said.

Freshman Tyler Elliot also had a nice day, taking third overall in the pole vault, going 11 feet.

The Oak Harbor boys earned an abundance of points in the shot put where they claimed second, third and fourth place respectively with Bill Schacht, Nick DelPrete and Rumble.

The Wildcat girls team ended up in fifth place overall with 89.5 points. South Whidbey (133), Ballard (101.25), Kennedy (94.75) and Port Angeles (93.25) finished higher.

With two of Oak Harbor’s best throwers gone, Turner thinks an even better finish was possible.

“If we would have had the whole team there I’m sure we would have finished higher,” he said.

Sophomore Bridgette Walker had a great day in the sprints. The transfer took second in the 100 (13.53) and third in the 400 (61.78) and also key in a second place finish for the 1600 meter relay team. She also nabbed a second in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 1.5 inches.

“She just keeps performing,” Turner said.

The girls didn’t have any first place finishers, but did have several in the top four. Other key performers included: ChrisGanna Cooper in the 200, Angelica Cooper in the 100 hurdles and Amy McElroy in the javelin.

Coupeville was a late entry into the Westling Invite, but put forth a solid performance. The girls took eighth and the boys took ninth in a meet that two other class A schools.

Senior Janiece Jenkins was a big scorer for the girls, taking third in the 100, fifth in the triple jump and was a member of the 400 and 800 meter relay teams that placed.

Kim Kisch took a second in the high jump, while Corrinne Gaddis was fourth in the long jump.

The CHS boys team was led by Andrew Moon, who took third in the 100, fifth in the 200 and anchored the fourth place 400 meter relay team. Other individuals who scored points for the Wolves were Jon Chittim in the 400 and Kyle King in the 800.

Coupeville will host the Northwest A/B league championships tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
