Golfers look strong

The Oak Harbor boys golf team used a beautiful day and a home course advantage to run away with its first match of the season Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats defeated 3A South Whidbey by nearly 40 strokes in the dual match at Whidbey Golf and Country Club.

“Playing on your home course always helps in the first match,” OHHS head coach John Matzen said. “We are working hard developing our ball striking abilities so we can have the confidence to play away from Whidbey as well.”

OHHS finished with a team total of 276 for 12 holes, while South Whidbey had 313.

Wildcat junior Matt Holmly had a solid first outing, shooting three over par, 52.

“Matt Holmly led the way in a solid first-match performance,” Matzen said.

Joe Ahn shot a 54, while Wes Loveng (55), Josh Whitley (57) and AJ Davis (58) all stayed under 60.

Oak Harbor travels to Harbour Point Golf Course in Mulkiteo Tuesday, March 29 before returning home to host Cascade, Everett and Lake Stevens at noon, Thursday, March 31 at WGCC.
