Wolves defeat Charles Wright Academy, 14-7, for first league win

One down, three to go.

The Coupeville football team moved a step toward achieving its goal of winning the final four games of the season, beating Charles Wright Academy of Tacoma, 14-7, on the road Friday night.

“We got one of the four out of the way,” head coach Ron Bagby said.

The Wolves (1-3, 2-5) gathered their first league victory of the season by maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the contest.

“We had the ball about 80-percent of the time,” Bagby said. “They were only able to move the ball up the field effectively once.”

Coupeville took the initial lead on its first drive of the game. Sophomore Casey Larson, who carried the ball 31 times for 130 yards, broke into the end zone on a short run.

The score remained 7-0, until the Terriers knotted it up on the first drive of the second half, scoring on a 1-yard run.

Charles Wright, who struggled to move the ball on Coupeville’s defense all night, received an opportunity to go up when Coupeville fumbled a punt return at its own 20 yard line late in the third quarter.

The Terriers pushed the ball down to the Wolves’ 10-yard line before Mike Bagby intercepted a pass to prevent a score.

“That was a pivotal play for us,” coach Bagby said.

The Wolves took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter after Mike Bagby connected with wide receiver Bryan Sherman for a 20-yard score. Bagby completed 12 of his 20 pass attempts for 100 yards.

Coupeville will host Darrington (1-3, 2-5) at 7 p.m., this Friday, Oct. 22 in its Homecoming game.

The Wolves hope to have two key players, J.J. Marti and Trevor Tucker, back in time for the big game.

“Those are key players for us on both sides of the ball,” coach Bagby said.

Marti, the leading rusher and tackler for the Wolves, has been nursing an injured ankle for three weeks. Tucker has been out for the last two weeks.
