For the second weekend in a row the Coupeville football team faced the daunting task of playing a top-ten team on the road.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, the outcome yielded a similar result, as they fell 41-6 to Orcas Island Saturday afternoon.

“Right now the kids are fighting and playing hard, but they’ve just lost a lot of confidence,” head coach Ron Bagby said.

Orcas jumped out to a quick first-quarter lead and did not look back. Hunter Easterling took a Coupeville punt 70-yards for a touchdown. The Vikings then pounded in a 4-yard run and a 1-yard score in the second quarter to give them a 20-0 halftime lead.

The Coupeville defense kept the game close in the first half, but the Wolves simply couldn’t get their offense moving down the field.

“Our offense is just not sustaining drives, so our defense ends up on the field too long,” Bagby said.

Orcas ruined any chances the Wolves had of a comeback to start the third quarter. Easterling came up with another huge play, taking a McLean Stone pass 57-yards to the endzone. The Vikings then added a 48-yard run for a touchdown and a 1-yard score, giving them a 41-0 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The Wolves finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when sophomore running back J.J. Marti broke lose from 2-yards out for a touchdown.

With Coupeville dropping their eighth straight game, coach Bagby feels most for his seniors.

“That’s who you really feel bad for is these seniors who really put in a lot of hard work,” he said.

The Wolves (0-4, 1-8) will get one more shot to pick up a win this season when they face yet another ranked team in Friday Harbor.

“We could be the spoiler,” Bagby said. “We’ll come out and we’ll play hard and we’ll see what happens.”

Originally scheduled to take place this Friday, the game has been moved to a 4 p.m. start for tomorrow, Nov. 6 at Mickey Clark Field.
