Road doesn't get any easier for Coupeville

In what has already been a rough season, it almost didn’t seem fair that the Coupeville football team had to take to the road and face the top-ranked 1A team in the state, Archbishop Murphy on Saturday afternoon.

The undefeated Wildcats didn’t hesitate showing the Wolves why they are atop all the state’s polls, as they ran away with a 55-14 victory.

“They’re as good as everybody says they are,” Coupeville head coach Ron Bagby said. “I will be surprised if anybody beats them this year.”

The Wildcats put the game away early, jumping out to a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Archbishop Murphy was able to run the ball well even without the services of their top rusher Jevon Butler, who has amassed over 1,200 yards in eight games this season. Craig Duncan (107-yards) along with a host of other running backs filled in, collecting 359-yards on the ground.

“They ran it well and stopped our run,” Bagby said. “We just couldn’t sustain any drives.”

Of the bright spots for Coupeville, they were able to throw the ball fairly well against Archbishop. Sophomore quarterback Mike Bagby was 18-for-35 passing for 151-yards and one touchdown.

The score was 55-0 before the Wolves rallied for two fourth quarter touchdowns.

“We were kind of mixing it up,” coach Bagby said. “Everybody got to play.”

Mike Bagby connected with sophomore Bryan Sherman on a 45-yard score and completed the two-point conversion pass to freshman Casey Larson, making the score 55-8. Freshman Trevor Tucker then added an 11-yard rush to round out the Wolves’ scoring.

Defensively, Kirby Mitchell and Casey Mitchell led the way for Coupeville with six tackles apiece. Blake Day, Casey Larson and Joe Rojas each had five.

Things won’t get any easier for Coupeville (0-3 in league, 1-7 overall), as they travel to eighth-ranked Orcas Island on Friday and face previously ranked Friday Harbor for their final game of the season the following week.

“Our next two weeks are tough,” Bagby said. “If we play well I think we can play with these teams.”
