Stars state case

For the first time in their 30 year history, the North Whidbey 11-12 year-old All-Star team is going to the state tournament.

“It’s quite an accomplishment,” head coach John Encinas said.

North Whidbey sent the 9-10 year-old All-Star team to state a couple of years ago, but this is the first time the 11-12 year-olds have advanced.

The team earned their rights to the state tournament, by beating the Burlington All-Stars 8-6 on Tuesday night for the District 11 title.

Recovering from a 6-1 loss the night before, the North Whidbey stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning. After giving up five runs the following inning, the NWLL All-Stars scored four more runs in the fifth, three of which came with two outs.

“We had the big hits when we needed them,” Encinas said.

North Whidbey plays their first game of the state tournament at 3 p.m. today, July 19 in Woodinville at the North Shore Complex against the top team from District 10.

Depending on how well they do, they could end up playing in the tournament through Tuesday.

The 11-12-year-old age group is the group who plays in the Little League World Series
