Oak Harbor cheers to second

The Oak Harbor cheerleaders wrapped up their last regional competition of the season by taking second place at the Northwest Championships at Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday.

The Cats came in behind Kelso, whose performance was “cleaner” according to Wildcat coach Pam Headridge.

“Oak Harbor did not perform as well as in the past because we had several sick girls,” Headridge said. “The first two sections were performed well, hitting all their stunts and jump sequences. But toward the end of the routine two stunts fell and one of the cheerleader’s shoes came off in the final pyramid, making it hard to fully extend the stunt.”

The Wildcats are now preparing for their trip to Anaheim, Calif., where they will compete in the USA Nationals March 28-30.

Kristin Acton will participate in the individual competition on Friday, while two five girl stunt teams will also compete that day. The squads consist of Lauren Acton, Kim Boon, Kristin Acton, Cassy Cooley, Jessica Gilbert, Megan Longland, Natalie Lumbo, Alicia Groberg, Vanessa Armstrong, and Madison Nikkola.

The entire team will compete on Saturday, where they will face off against 36 other squads in their division. If they win Saturday they will move on to the finals on Sunday.
