King gets scoring recrod

Coupeville girls coach Greg Oldham wanted nothing more than to see senior Brianne King break the all-time Wolves’ scoring record at home in Tuesday night’s 77-48 victory over Concrete.

The funny thing is Oldham never told King how close she was to breaking the 1,270 point scoring record. He wanted to keep it low-key and let it happen without having her worry about it.

“I had no clue,” King said. “I don’t know how everyone else knew.”

With 2:30 remaining in the game, a timeout was called. Keeping an eye on her points, Oldham announced to his team that he would like to run plays for King to score. At that point she caught on.

“Coach said if Brianne is open, get her the ball,” King said. “I knew something was up because he doesn’t normally do that.”

Unfortunately, she came up just short of the 27 points needed to break the record, putting in 25.

The record was previously held by 1998 Coupeville graduate Zenovia Barron, who Oldham regards as a “player who put Coupeville girls basketball on the map.”

“I didn’t have the privilege to see her play but everybody here says she was the greatest player in Coupeville history,” Oldham said.

It didn’t take long for King to get her second chance at the record, as the Wolves played their second game in as many nights against Overlake. With 6:19 remaining in the first quarter, King put in a left-handed lay-up to put her over the top surpassing Barron’s record.

“It was pretty cool to break a record that I was able to watch someone else set,” King said.

Oldham knows just how rare an accomplishment like this is.

“It takes four great years to break a record like that,” Oldham said. “A special kid like that doesn’t come along often.”

Coupeville went on to collect its second win in as many nights defeating Overlake, 65-50.

King led the way for the Wolves in scoring with 16 points. Senior Carly Guillory had 12 points and 15 rebounds for Coupeville.

Next for the Wolves is LaConner at 7 p.m. at home.
