Little Leaguers pick up a pair of victories

The two North Whidbey 9 and 10-year old Little League all-star squads each picked up a victory in their first game of the District 11 tournament on Saturday morning at the City Beach ballfields in Oak Harbor.

The Central squad downed Anacortes’ 11-0 as the game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule, while the North Whidbey All-Stars shut out South Skagit American team 7-0.

The North Whidbey All-Stars contest was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Cameron Buckles led off with a double and came around to score on Jay Stout’s RBI triple. Billy Lamson and Kian Mebane each picked up hits in the inning to add another run and allowing North Whidbey to go up 2-0.

In the fifth, the squad added another run when Billy Carpenter singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches by the South Skagit pitcher. Carpenter then came home to score on a sacrifice bunt.

North Whidbey then put the game out of reach in the sixth by scoring six runs, most of them on bunts that South Skagit couldn’t handle.

Kody Hubbell picked up the win with five innings of shutout ball. Nathan Young came in and closed the Americans down throwing a scoreless sixth inning to complete the shutout.

North Whidbey played Burlington yesterday in the second round of the nine-team double elimination tournament which is made up of squads from Island and Skagit Counties. Central Whidbey took on South Whidbey.

Both teams will continue play at the City Beach fields in the tournament either tonight or Thursday night.
