Local girl selected for summer soccer program
Megan Ledford, a seventh-grader at North Whidbey Middle School, has been selected to be a People to People Sports Ambassador this summer in Europe.
Ledford, 13, will leave in July and participate in a soccer mini-camp and instructional clinic in Dusseldorf, Germany where she will meet her teammates and coaches.
Following the clinic she will compete against international athletes her own age in a tournament in Haarem, Holland. Throughout her 12 days in the program, Megan will also take part in activities that have been planned to provide the participants with an overview of each countrys culture and visit historical sites.
Megan was selected for the People to People program on a basis of recommendations from her coach and interviews with a selection committee from the program office.
Since 1963, People to People has sent thousands of young people abroad to take part in a cultural experience. Students can earn high school credits for their participation.
Right now Megan is seeking community assistance for the cost of the program. There will be a car wash and hot dog sale at Godfathers Pizza in Oak Harbor on March 30 and April 27.
There is also an account set up in Megans name at Whidbey Island Bank. For more information you can check out the program online at www.sportsambassadors.org or at www.ptpi.org. For local information call 279-1612.
