Coupeville high schooler wins Jr. Olympics steeplechase

Coupeville’s Adrianna Royal, who is a member of the Oak Harbor High School cross country team and a distance runner for the Coupeville High School track team won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in the 15- to-16-year-old division at Western Washington Junior Olympics track and field championships held June 11.

In winning the event, the sophomore advances to the Junior Olympic Track and Field regionals July 10 to 13 at Spokane Falls Community College.

Athletes from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska will compete in Spokane, and the top three finishers in each event move on to the National Championships in Omaha, Neb., July 24 to July 27.

Royal also finished fourth in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:34.86, which qualified her for the Western Washington championships at Chief Sealth High School in West Seattle.

During the 2008 high school track season, Royal placed eighth at the district meet in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events with times of 5:34.41 and 12:20.28, respectively.
