"What a difference a week makes. The Coupeville Wolves rebounded from their toughest loss of the year to post their most emphatic victory, a 46-6 triumph at Friday Harbor last Friday night. It was quite a turnabout from the 45-0 defeat against Orcas the week before. The Wolves did it with strong defense and execution on offense. It was defense that got Coupeville on the scoreboard first, as linebacker Ian Barron scooped up a Friday Harbor fumble in the first quarter and ran 68 yards for a touchdown. Coupeville 6, Friday Harbor 0.The next time the Wolves had the ball they mounted a quick drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Noah Roehl. Coupeville 12, Friday Harbor 0.The Wolverines were able to punch in a score using their own running game, but in the second quarter Coupeville started to break the game open. Wolves receiver Geoff Hageman caught a 4-yard scoring pass from Roehl, and then Coupeville's Dustin VanVelkinbourgh scored on a 57 yard run and added the point-after kick. The score at the half: Coupeville 27, Friday Harbor 6.In the third quarter it was more of the same, as Barron ran for one touchdown and Roehl connected on two more scoring passes, one a 4-yarder to Joe Kelley and the other a 14-yard strike to VanVelkinbourgh. The Wolves played a host of reserves in a scoreless fourth quarter.Coupeville assistant coach Tom Roehl said several players stood out in the victory. Mike Smart played a strong game at linebacker. He did a good job of recognizing the vulnerable gaps to hit and calling the correct side to attack, Roehl said.Other standouts included Barron, who rushed for 119 yards but actually ran the ball for a total of 295 yards combined rushing and returns, with two touchdowns; VanVelkinbourgh, who rushed for 57 yards, recovered his own onside kick and caught a touchdown pass; Kelley, who caught a touchdown pass and led the team in tackles; Roehl, who threw for 96 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another; J.D. Myers, who saw some varsity time at linebacker; Hageman, who logged a touchdown catch, an interception and knocked down two other passes; and Dan McDonald, who did a good job running and blocking.Coupeville plays Darrington at home in a homecoming matchup this Friday.
