"Erin Monaghan was awarded the 1999 Senior Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Judo Association for scoring the most points in Washington state. The award is strictly based on points accumulated throughout the year in various competitions and tournaments. Her points totaled a whopping 154 from tournaments from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1999. Monaghan has been involved in Judo for about nine years. She is a senior at Oak Harbor High School. Erin Monaghan finished first in the state tournament in January, making her eligible to compete in the Junior Nationals in Oakland, Calif., this weekend. Last year, she placed third in the Junior Nationals.Colleen Monaghan, women's coach at the NAS Whidbey Judo club, nominated her daughter for senior athlete of the year.I picked the nominee out for the number of points they had, Colleen Monaghan said. One thing about Erin was we could use her junior and senior record to build her points, because she'd just turned 17 - the cut-off date for the junior division."
