"Prep RoundupSOFTBALLCoupeville 11, Darrington 0Orcas 12, Coupeville 11April Bagby tossed a rare shutout Friday as the Coupeville girls roared back from a disappointing opening-day loss to crush Darrington, 11-0.Bagby, backed by a solid defense, nailed down the first complete-game Coupeville shutout in at least four years, assistant coach Sal Rizzo said.The win came three days after the Wolves dropped a thriller to league rival Orcas Island, 12-11.The Wolves dropped behind early in that one, giving up 5 runs in the first. But they crept back, then poured it on in the top of the seventh to plate 7 runs and take a 2-run lead, Rizzo said.Orcas came back in their half of the seventh with 3 runs to seal the win. The Wolves' record stood at 1-1 heading into Tuesday's late game at Friday Harbor.TRACKCOUPEVILLE GIRLSThe Coupeville girls took second place in the seven-team, season-opening Northwest A League opener at Coupeville Friday.Mount Vernon Christian led the pack with a dominating 212-point performance, followed by Coupeville at 69, Concrete at 52.5, LaConner at 47, Archbishop Thomas Murphy at 42, Friday Harbor at 30.5 and Lopez at 0.Top performers for Coupeville included Jess Roundy, 1st in 100-meter hurdles, 16.4; Yashmine Knox, 2nd 100 meters, 13.6, 1st high jump, 4-6, 2nd long jump, 13-11; Briann King, 1st 800 meters, 2:44.4, 1st 1600 meters, 6:36.6; and the 400-meter relay team, 55.4.The girls compete again Thursday at LaConner.COUPEVILLE BOYSThe Coupeville boys didn't finish high in the standings in the seven-team Northwest A League opener Friday at Coupeville, but their fifth-place finish was only 19 points off second-place finisher Archbishop Thomas Murphy.Top individual performances were turned in by Matt Frost, 1st in 800 meters, 2:07.7; Joe Donnellon, 1st in 1600 meters, 4:41.8, 1st 3200 meters, 10:27.7; and the 1600-meter relay team, 3rd place, 3:50.6OAK HARBOR CO-EDOak Harbor's boys and girls track teams joined forces Saturday for Lynden's unique 12th Annual Co-ed Relays, in some of the nastiest weather anyone can remember for a local track meet.Oak Harbor's mixed-gender relay teams logged only one victory, in the 4x800-meter relay, but they placed in 13 of 14 relays in the 13-team event.Maile Venable, Molly Bull, Adam Shelly and Scott Sebens ran for the winning 4x800-meter team. Second-place finishes were logged in the team 3000 meters by Lora Eelkema, Tim Riney, Wes Hartman and Nikki Gamble; and by the 4x100-meter relay with Abby Allen, Dan Sowers, Raven Ellison and Thomas McMickle.Third places included the 4x100-meter hurdle relay with Tim Boyles, Yuki Norton, Dana Mansfield and Stefan Kulpa; the high jump relay with Lora Eelkema, Kim Gabler, Michael Brabner and Aidrienne Wilkins; and the long jump relay with Melissa Baker, Adam Shelly, Molly Bull and Jeremy Morgan."
