"Last Year, Oak Harbor High School's district champion golf teams were among the school's strongest, in any sport. This year, though, with several young players taking to the competition links for the first time, it's wait-and-see, coach John Matzen said. At least, on the boy's side.Everett and Mount Vernon tied at 355 Monday over 15 holes at Whidbey Golf & Country Club. Oak Harbor's boys logged a 395.It was the first match of the year for Oak Harbor's young squad, and it was an interesting one, Matzen said. For starters, ties are rare in stroke-play team golf. And it gave Matzen a close look at some young golfers. With individual par for the day at 60, Shane Wells led Oak Harbor's performance with a 66, followed by Tad Frost at 73, Paul Yu at 82, Steve Daves at 86 and Andrew Dessert at 88.For the first match of a season, it wasn't bad, Matzen said. What happens from here on depends on how rapidly the team gels.Matzen said he's predict a middle-of-the-pack league finish for his boys, if he had to take a guess, but it depends on how strong our strong guys are, and how consistent our young players are.The boys return to the links this afternoon against Mariner. The girls take on Mariner Thursday. Both matches start at 3 p.m. at Whidbey Golf & Country Club."
