Oak Harbor picks up 2 wins | Legion
Avenging two earlier league losses, the Oak Harbor Legion baseball team knocked off Marysville 9-6 Monday, July 1, and Bellingham Post 7 4-1 Tuesday, July 2, for a pair of home wins.
Oak Harbor travels to the Skagit U16 Wood Bat Invitational this weekend, starting with two games Friday at the Skagit Valley Dream Field. Oak Harbor faces the Seattle Stars at 9 a.m. and the Victoria Mariners at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman Anderson Field, Oak Harbor meets the Washington Rush at 10 a.m. and Phiten of Bellevue at 12:30 p.m.
The top two teams in each of the five-team divisions face off Sunday.
Marysville (4-12) jetted to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning Monday, but Oak Harbor quickly struck back with five runs in its half and added three more runs in the second to take command.
In the Oak Harbor first, aggressive base running, a wild pitcher and timely hits fueled the rally. Brent Mertins and Anthony Stewart walked, then after an out, Rhys Mattila and Clay Doughty were each hit by a pitch. Run scoring singles by Danny Wolfe and Quentin Tungate finished the scoring. Oak Harbor collected four stolen bases during the inning, include Stewart’s swipe of home.
Oak Harbor turned up the power in the second. Stewart led with a triple, then Jack Richter and Mattila doubled. After a Doughty single, Jozef Mendoza drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Oak Harbor’s final run came in the sixth on singles by Stewart and Mattila and an error.
Marysville scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth and seventh.
Stewart and Mattila each finished 2-for-3.
Wolfe pitched the first six innings and gave up no earned runs and struck out four.
Oak Harbor used another quick start to dump Bellingham, scoring three times in the first. Mertins was hit by a pitch, followed by singles by Stewart and Richter. After an error, Mattila singled in the third run.
Post 7 (8-3) scored its run in the third, then Oak Harbor got it back in the fourth. Tyler Snavely reached on an error and Mertins singled in front of Richter’s sacrifice fly.
Stewart went 3-for-3 and Richter 2-for-2.
Starting pitcher Brandon Bailey worked into the third inning when Richter entered with the bases loaded and no outs. Richter limited the damage with a strike out, sacrifice fly and ground out.
Oak Harbor (14-8, 6-6) finishes league play next week with a pair of double headers. It travels to Stanwood (4-5) at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, and then hosts Ferndale (9-2) at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 11.
