D'Almeida, Savalza named CHS's Athletes of Year
Seniors Amanda d'Almeida and Danny Savalza received Coupeville High School's Athlete of the Year honors at the annual awards night Thursday, May 30.
Two other seniors, Bessie Walstad and Drew Chan, were selected for the Cliff Gillies Award.
D'Almeida competed in soccer and tennis, while Savalza was a member of the football and soccer teams.
In her career, d'Almeida won three district tennis doubles titles and finished third in district singles this year, and was a multi-year all-conference selection in soccer.
D'Almeida, a 4.0 student, will attend college and play soccer at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
Savalza, a linebacker and running back, was one of the leaders of the Coupeville defense last fall. In addition to his exploits on the field, he was noted for his school spirit, directing the Wolves' rooting section during volleyball and basketball games.
Cliff Gillies was a long-time Washington state coach, principal and director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.
The award is given at each state school for participation in student activities, academic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship.
Walstad and Chan captained each of their teams. Walstad played volleyball, basketball and softball, and Chan competed in basketball and baseball.
