Coupeville loses to South Whidbey | Softball
Coupeville scored first but the South Whidbey High School softball team scored more often to defeat the Wolves 7-1 Monday, April 29, in Langley.
Coupeville scored in the second inning. Bessie Walstad walked, McKayla Bailey hit a line drive single off the pitcher's knee and Madi Strasburg singled in Walstad. That was it for the Wolves' offense.
The lead held until the bottom of the third when the Falcons scored five runs with the help of a walk, two singles, a double and Mackenzie Hezel's home run.
South Whidbey added single runs in the fourth and sixth and finished with nine hits. Bailey took the pitching loss.
Coupeville collected only five hits, striking out 11 times and leaving eight runners stranded. Hailey Hammer doubled, Bailey had two singles and Maria Rockwell and Strasburg singled.
Coupeville co-coach David King said, "A tough game. We did not come out focused. We are making the same mistakes on defense that we did at the start of the season. "Offensively we are not hustling on every play or making the adjustments at the plate."
He added, "South Whidbey came ready to play and out hustled and outplayed us today."
Coupeville (4-10, 5-10) entertains first-place Cedarcrest (12-2, 13-2) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.
