Bats heat up in Wildcat win | Softball
With its bats coming out of hibernation, the Oak Harbor High School softball team thumped visiting Shorewood 10-0 in six innings Tuesday, April 23.
The Wildcats, who had only three hits in their previous four games, exploded for 10 against the Thunderbirds (0-9, 2-14), including a towering home run by Shawna Steele.
While the offense was piling up runs, pitcher Emily Saar fired a two-hitter, striking out six and walking none. Both Shorewood hits came in the fourth inning.
Oak Harbor set the tone with a three-run first. Lexie Findley and Natalie Fiallos singled. One run scored on an error off Steele’s bat and two more on a Saar base hit.
The Wildcats added another three in the third. With two outs, Morgan Young and Kelly Findley walked and Nicole Vagt was hit by a pitch. A walk to Hannah Salmons forced in one run, then Bella Sampson singled in two.
Steele followed Fiallos’ bunt single with the home run in the two-run fourth.
Oak Harbor scored single runs in the fifth and sixth.
In the fifth, Vagt singled and eventually scored on an error.
In the sixth, Morgan Young walked, stole second and moved to third on Kelly Findley’s hit. The Wildcats ended the game on the 10-run rule when Salmons’ ground out scored Young.
Oak Harbor (3-5, 4-10) plays at Marysville Getchell (3-4, 5-9) at 4 p.m. Friday in a battle for second place in the Wesco 3A North.
