Doubles rally in Wolves' win | Tennis
Two come-from-behind wins in doubles locked up a 4-1 win for the Coupeville High School tennis team over visiting Lakewood Tuesday, April 23.
The Cougars loaded up their doubles teams, which resulted in a pair of easy wins for Coupeville’s two singles players, Amanda d’Almeida (6-0, 6-0) and Allie Hanigan (6-0, 6-0).
Even with the 2-0 lead, the Wolves’ win wasn’t secure. The stacked Lakewood’s doubles team won their first sets and looked be in position to win the overall match 3-2.
In first doubles, Coupeville’s Iris Ryckaert and Holly Craggs dropped their first four games, then ran off five straight points before falling 7-5.
The pair settled down and squeaked out a 7-6(7-5) second set win, then topped it off with a 6-3 win in the third set.
Coach Ken Stange said, “Iris and Holly could have easily rolled over and lost the match. They did just the opposite. They ran for errant balls. They picked each other up when they were down. They played as one during the final two sets.”
In second doubles, Julia Myers and Maureen Rice were thumped 6-2 in the first set, but rebounded nicely with 6-4, 6-3 wins.
Stange said, “As for Julia and Maureen, they both have had their struggles during matches, and after dropping the first set, they, too, could have rolled over. They didn't relent. They proved that they could deliver in the clutch.”
McKenzie Bailey and Samantha Martin lost in third doubles 6-2, 6-4.
Stange said, “I was thoroughly impressed with my one and two doubles teams. Sure, they had to raise their levels of play to win. Many players can raise their game when needed. What truly impressed me today was their resilience and perseverance. Those girls were warriors today. While it seemed we would drop the match 2-3, we ended up winning 4-1.”
Coupeville (7-2) entertains Granite Falls (2-7) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25; goes to Chimacum Friday; and finishes the regular with another home match with Lakewood (0-3, 0-4)Tuesday.
