Wildcats top Chargers, look to move into 2nd place | Baseball
Picking up an important 8-3 win over visiting Marysville Getchell Friday, April 5, the Oak Harbor High School baseball team now tangles with Stanwood in a critical three-game series this week.
The win over the Chargers gave the Wildcats a 2-1 edge in the series between the two teams and enabled Oak Harbor (3-5, 4-7) to move past Marysville Getchell (2-6, 3-6) into third in the Wesco North 3A standings.
Now Oak Harbor has its sights on second-place Stanwood (4-3, 4-6). The top two teams in the division open postseason play with a home game.
The Wildcats travel to Stanwood Tuesday and Friday and host the Spartans at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
In the 8-3 win over the Chargers Friday, Grant Schroeder and Brent Mertins combined to hold MG to no earned runs, and Jack Richter led the offense with three hits, including a triple, and five runs batted in.
The Chargers scored first with two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Oak Harbor quickly countered with three runs in its half.
Richter reached when the Getchell right fielder dropped a short fly ball, and, after an out, Clay Doughty and Mike Maletto walked. Brandon Bailey's fly to left scored one run, then Cory Cameron doubled in two more.
In the third inning, Richter's two-run triple scored Anthony Stewart, who was hit by a pitch, and Mertins, who walked.
Oak Harbor added two more in the fourth to make it 7-2.
Bailey singled, Schroeder and Stewart walked and Richter's base hit scored two.
Marysville Getchell collected another unearned run in the fifth, then Oak Harbor finished the scoring with a single run in the sixth. Cameron and Schroeder singled, then Richter completed his outstanding day with an RBI single.
Schroeder pitched the first five innings, received the win and yielded four hits and three walks to go with two strike outs.
Mertins tossed the final two innings and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out two.
Cameron finished with two hits and Schroeder, Mertins and Bailey one each.
