Score one for the mud puddle.

Friday Harbor, with the aid of a puddle, edged the visiting Coupeville High School soccer team 1-0 Tuesday, March 12.

Down 1-0 with 10 minutes left in the match, it appeared Nathan Lamb was about to score the equalizer for the Wolves. He beat the Friday Harbor goal keeper and hit the ball with “plenty of power,” according to coach Paul Mendes, and just as the ball was about to cross the goal line, it was stopped by a mud puddle.

“It was one of those nights,” Mendes said.

Playing on an extremely muddy field, Coupeville pressured the Wolverines the entire game but couldn’t punch in a goal. The Wolves outshot Friday Harbor 22-12, but it was the Wolverine’s who tallied the only score.

Michael Hoeler scored off a goal-mouth scramble in the 22nd minute.

Mendes said in spite of the conditions “we created numerous chances but the ball would not go in for us tonight.”

He added, “A hard fought game right to the end. We look forward to playing them again later in the season.”

The two square off in Coupeville Wednesday, April 17.

Coupeville (0-1) begins conference play at Cedarcrest at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. The first home match is with South Whidbey at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26.
