Tahoma tops Oak Harbor | Girls basketball

The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team closed out the two-day Prostock Winter Classic in Bellingham with a 57-41 loss to Tahoma Friday, Dec. 28.

Oak Harbor opened the tournament with a 58-46 loss to Bellingham Thursday. Tahoma (6-4), from Covington, defeated Cedarcrest 54-47.

Wildcat coach Trisha Wieber said her team played without injured point guard Natalie Fiallos all week, which "put a big hole in the lineup."

She added, "We lost by 16 to the most athletic team we have played this year without Natalie. So some girls really stepped up and played."

Kelsey Rankin, Wieber said, had "a great game" and scored a career-high 23 points to lead Oak Harbor. Only four Wildcats scored. Annie Leete had 11, Jalani Bobo five and Ciera Wiser two.

Wieber also lauded the play of AnnaBelle Whitefoot, who was called up from the freshman team to help fill the void of the missing Fiallos.

The Bears led 16-10 after the first quarter and then out scored Oak Harbor 24-13 to lead 40-23 at the break.

"Obviously the second quarter was a major problem defensively," Wieber said.

Tahoma led 48-33 after the third quarter as the Wildcats kept pace in the second half.

Oak Harbor (3-7) heads to Sedro-Woolley (3-7) at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, for a nonleague game.
