A torrid start and a hot finish helped the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team overcome a cool middle in the Wildcats’ 57-39 win over visiting Marysville Getchell Thursday, Dec. 20.

Oak Harbor sped to a 17-1 lead, saw the margin dwindle to three with three minutes left in the third quarter and then held the Chargers (0-3, 2-7) to two fourth-quarter points to win going away.

During the opening run, Jalani Bobo scored 10 points and Annie Leete scored five and dished out four assists.

MG committed nine turnovers under the Wildcats’ pressure in the first period and connected on only two of 14 shots.

The Wildcats led 21-6 at the quarter and 33-23 at halftime.

In an 80 second span in the third quarter, the Chargers’ Marina Wika scored eight points and Getchell cut the gap to three, 38-35.

Oak Harbor regrouped and went up 43-37 entering the fourth period.

The game ended like it started. Under an aggressive Oak Harbor defense, Getchell hit only one of 11 shots and committed eight turnovers in the final eight minutes.

Coach Trisha Wieber said, “We finished well. The nice thing tonight – and the starters played well – was that the young kids held it together.”

Leete, who was playing sick according to Wieber, recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists. She also had seven rebounds and five steals.

Bobo scored a career high 19 points and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Ciera Wiser had 10 points and six rebounds, Kelsey Rankin had five points and six rebounds, and Jinai Guzman and Deja Bunch scored two points each.

Oak Harbor (1-3, 3-4) hosts Ferndale (6-0) in a nonleague game at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.
