Wolves fall twice to Lakewood

Coming off an 8-4 loss on the road at Lakewood Monday afternoon, the Coupeville baseball team nearly pulled off its second league victory of the season in a rematch against the Cougars at Robert W. Sherman Field on Wednesday.
The Wolves held a 3-1 lead after three innings of play behind a strong pitching effort from Cory Black, only to have the pesky Cougars come alive in the top of the fourth inning.
Lakewood pushed across three runs in the inning and then managed to hold Coupevilles offense in check to record a come-from-behind 4-to-3 victory.
Wolves coach Willie Smith said Mondays game was dictated by good pitching.
They had a guy who threw the ball in the mid-80s, but we managed to get six hits off of him, Smith said.
The score was tied 2-to-2 going into the fourth inning Coupeville made a couple of mental mistakes and Lakewood was able to put six runs on the board.
We played a pretty good ball game but it was one bad inning,just like its been all season, that did us in, Smith said.
Trailing 8-2, James Smith connected for a two-run homer in the top half of the sixth inning to plate Coupevilles final two runs.
In Wednesdays game, Kyle Wilcox and Alex Evans both stroked doubles for the Wolves.
Coupeville (1-16) plays its next home game at 4 p.m. Thursday in a non-league matchup against Nooksack Valley.
