Snohomish swims past Wildcats

Prior to the start of Thursday afternoon’s swim meet at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool against Snohomish, Oak Harbor coach Erika Miller said her team thought the Panthers were big, fast and scary.

It was true. Snohomish did have a big team with many more swimmers, but Oak Harbor hung right with the Panthers before losing a narrow 96-82 decision.

The Wildcats won just four events, but had a number of strong second and third-place finishes.

Junior Carolyn Vasquez was a gold-medal winner in three events, the 50 and 100-meter freestyles in times of 29.79 and 1:07.21, respectively, and as a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

“It was good to win against Snohomish,” Vasquez said at the conclusion of the 50 freestyle. “But my time wasn’t my best so I’m a little disappointed in that.”

KeriAnne Wright had two first-place finishes for Oak Harbor.

She won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:40.68 and was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team.

Other members on the winning relay team were sophomore Kim Klieman and freshman Rachel Weinstein. The team finished the event with a clocking of 2:03.16.

Wright was trailing after the first leg of the individual medley, but took the lead after the 50-meter breaststroke leg.

At a prior meet, she said the breaststroke was not one of her stronger strokes.

“I guess my breaststroke has improved during the season and I’ve gotten stronger,” she said.

Wright also had a strong second leg in the 200 freestyle relay to put the Wildcats in front to stay.

Oak Harbor now has a 6-3-1 record in meets this season.
