The cardiac kids from Coupeville pulled out another one.
Trailing 30-29 heading into the fourth quarter Friday night, the Wolves outscored Friday Harbor 11-4 in the final eight minutes of the game to come away with a 40-34 non-league victory.
The victory was the third in a row for the Wolf Pack and upped their season record to 5-3.
We gave the fans a little excitement and entertainment tonight, a smiling coach Blake Severns said after the game. If you pay five dollars to get in, you might as well get your moneys worth.
Coupeville held a 10-8 lead after the first quarter and clung to a single-point lead, 22-21, at halftime.
Hayley Ebersole was right on target in the second quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 13 points in the period, including the first of a pair of three-point baskets.
Its been a few years since Ive played competitively and I think the rust is starting to come off, the senior said. Im really proud, we played really well together tonight.
Friday Harbor went on a 7-1 run to open the third period and took a 28-23 lead, before Ebersoles second 3-pointer narrowed the margin and the defense began to pick things up.
Megan Smith also scored 13 points for Coupeville and Shawna West had 10.
I wasnt real happy with our energy at times, but we picked it up as the game went along, Severns said. The crowd got into it and then we got into it.
The Wolverines were up by a point at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Wolves defense rose to the occasion and three free throws by West put Coupeville in front to stay.
It was an exciting one, senior Paige Mueller, one of the Wolves stand-out defensive players, said. We really picked it up in the second half and Im really happy.
Kelsey ODay scored 12 points to lead Friday Harbor.
I think were getting there and the girls are starting to feel good about themselves, Severns said.
