Malloy nominated for regional honor; fan votes needed

Oak Harbor Olympian Marti Malloy has been nominated as the Northwest Female Sports Star of the Year by the Seattle Sports Commission.

Just as the Whidbey community supported Malloy in her quest for an Olympic medal, it can back her once again.  The winner of the Sports Star of the Year honor is based on fan voting.

Fans can vote once every 24 hours until Jan. 18 at .

In addition to Female Sports Star of the year, voters can cast ballots for Male Sports Star of the Year, Professional Sports Star of the Year and Sports Story of the Year.

Winners will be announced at an awards show Friday, Jan. 25, at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

The awards, which are sponsored by the MTR Western motorcar company, have been presented since 1936.

Joining Malloy in the Female Sports Star of the Year category are fellow Northwest Olympians Mary Whipple (rowing), Jennie Reed (cycling) and Ariana Kukors (swimming) and University of Washington distance runner Katie Flood.
