Blaine and a bug waylaid the Coupeville boys basketball team 57-17 in the season opener Saturday, Dec. 1, in Coupeville.

The Wolves suited up only six players for the game and half of those played sick. The trash can beside the team bench was used for more than collecting garbage during the breaks in the game.

Coupeville couldn't call up junior varsity players to help out because the Wolves had only five to play the preliminary game as illness and several other factors left the entire program short handed.

Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said among the missing were three potential starters.

The weary and sick Wolves hung with Blaine (1-1) early, but fatigue and nausea set in and Coupeville collected only five points in the second half.

Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said, "We are way better than the score indicated today. It is a testament to the kids that they showed up; they should have stayed home."

The bug derailed the Wolves' hopes of getting off to a good start after going winless in 2011-12. Smith said, "We will get better. It is not a good feeling to start this way."

Coupeville's Carson Risner hit the game's first hoop, then Blaine rattled off 10 consecutive points with the help of nine Wolf first-quarter turnovers. The Borderites led 17-5 at the end of the quarter and 27-12 at the half.

Blaine scored the first eight points of the second half, then Drew Chan drilled a three-pointer for Coupeville. The Wolves wouldn't score again until Aaron Trumbull connected in the game's final minute.

Chan finished with five points, Risner four, Aaron Curtin three, Josh Wilsey two, Trumbull two and Gavin O'Keefe one.

The Wolves were stung by 24 turnovers and poor free-throw shooting, hitting only one of 13.

Coupeville (0-1) goes to Seattle to face University Prep (1-1) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4.
