Wolves play well in loss to unbeaten King's | Volleyball

It's how you play the game.

Though the Coupeville High School volleyball team lost 3-0 at King's in Shoreline Tuesday, Oct. 23, it played a strong game against the seventh-ranked Knights.

"From start to finish, we played our best match of the year," said Coupeville coach Toni Crebbin.

The Wolves, who won only three of 14 league matches, challenged the 13-0 Knights throughout, losing 22-25, 15-25, 19-25.

Crebbin said Coupeville held a 15-10 lead in the first game and led early in the third and "played with them until the end."

She added, "It's nice to say you can play with one of the good teams."

King's was "very complimentary" of the Wolves' performance, Crebbin said.

Coupeville was steady in all phases but excelled on defense, according to Crebbin.

Bessie Walstad led the defense with 23 digs and Haley Sherman added 13.

Setter Megan Oakes "did a good job of spreading things around" on offense, Crebbin said.

Walstad and Hailey Hammer each had five kills and Bree Messner four.

The Wolves now have some momentum heading into the district tournament at 11:30 a.m. at Lynden Christian Saturday, Oct. 27. Coupeville, the No. 8 seed, meets top-seed Nooksack Valley (8-6) in the opening round of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

Crebbin said, "The girls feel really good about how they played, and they should…It is a confidence builder going into district."
